THE FUNDING MAP / GRANTS AND DEADLINES

Climate and Energy Fund (Orkusjóður) project grants

The fund pays grants to Icelandic projects that cut emissions, replace fossil fuels with domestic renewable energy, or bring new climate technology into use. Calls have included energy transition, circular economy, industrial (ETS) decarbonisation and geothermal innovation. For hardtech teams it is a non-dilutive way to part-fund a first physical deployment in Iceland.

Deadlines

No upcoming deadline is published right now. Check the program page for the next call.

The fund works through time-limited calls, not a rolling window. I found no open call on 2026-10-05 that suits hardtech, so no deadline is listed. The 2025 general call closed on 2025-06-01. The geothermal innovation call closed on 2025-12-20. The industrial ETS innovation call closed on 2026-02-16. The open calls I found are for EV charging (for example, accommodation sites, 2026-10-15), which are not hardtech. Watch the fund page for the next general or innovation call. The fund says its task is to speed up the energy transition with proven technology. Newly developed technology qualifies only if it is a fully tested market product, so early R&D is a poor fit. Grants are normally paid out only after the project is complete, so the applicant must pre-finance the work. Evaluation is competitive and favours the most fossil fuel or emissions avoided per grant króna. Applications go through the fund's online portal. The industrial ETS call used Rannís's system instead. Rules follow Regulation No. 1566/2024.

Who can apply

Open to companies in Iceland. Individuals, companies and government agencies can apply. Projects must cut greenhouse gas emissions under Iceland's direct responsibility, or bring innovation and new technology to environment, energy and climate. Each call sets its own focus areas and rules. The fund gives priority to projects that depend on its support to go ahead.

Amount

Usually 33% of project cost excluding VAT. Call budgets vary. The 2025 general call had ISK 1.3 billion in total, with up to ISK 300 million for new technology and innovation. A separate geothermal innovation call offered ISK 600 million.
